Why Macfarlanes?

Having looked at numerous City firms when deciding upon my vacation scheme applications, Macfarlanes stood out. The firm is large enough to offer high quality work with an international outlook, yet small enough to place great emphasis upon individual growth with a close-knit environment. My experience at the assessment centre for the scheme also confirmed that Macfarlanes was different. The firm was extremely friendly and created an atmosphere in which students were truly able to do their best to impress. I knew at this point that a place on the scheme would be hugely enjoyable.

Real insight

Macfarlanes' vacation scheme is designed to give students a real insight into the workings and culture of the firm and this is certainly achieved. The two weeks are split equally in two departments with a trainee. During the first week of the scheme I sat in Corporate and M&A.  From the first day I was challenged, undertaking a research project a partner had requested. Although this was initially daunting, the trainee with whom I was sitting was more than happy to take time to explain issues and to explore my own thoughts, giving me great confidence in approaching future tasks. During the week I also attended departmental meetings, including a small partner-led meeting in which the trainees had real input. By the end of the first week I came to realise that this level of trainee involvement was entirely usual, showing the value that Macfarlanes places upon its trainees' development. In the second week of the scheme I sat in Banking and Finance. Once again I was immediately made to feel part of the team, as trainees, associates and partners all took time to involve me in what was going on. I was invited to sit-in on several conference calls, assist with research projects and accompany trainees to file papers at the Royal Courts of Justice. At every stage of the scheme I felt my involvement was genuinely valued, especially given I was always dealing with 'live' issues.

Depth and quality of work

During the scheme there were several departmental talks, which allowed me to fully understand the depth and quality of work which Macfarlanes undertakes and the type of work which trainees would deal with. Furthermore, a mock transaction ran throughout the duration of the two weeks and provided me with an excellent opportunity to understand how a commercial law firm operates. More significantly, however, it highlighted the importance of creating relationships and the strength of the team. I came to realise very early on in the scheme that this is what Macfarlanes is all about and convinced me that this would be the place for me.

Strong social element

The vacation scheme also comprised of a strong social element. This included a trip to the Bank of England, drinks with the trainees and Urban Golf. There was also a final group meal, which provided a great opportunity to relax (and sample cocktails) following the interviews earlier in the day. I was also invited to Macfarlanes' rugby training and various other activities that trainees would participate in. The collegiality which exists within the office was apparent in these social occasions and created a relaxed and hugely enjoyable atmosphere.

Refreshing approach

Vacation scheme students are presented with a true picture of how Macfarlanes operates and are, as a result, allowed to make their own assessment of the firm. This was made clear at numerous points throughout the scheme, including in a very open discussion with the senior partner. I found this to be a refreshing approach and one which illustrates Macfarlanes' commitment to the development of the individual. I finished the scheme with the understanding that Macfarlanes would provide an environment in which I would flourish.
