Macfarlanes advises Wightlink on OFT Market Study

Macfarlanes has advised Wightlink on the recent investigation by the Office of Fair Trading ("OFT") into the cross-Solent ferry market.

Following a complaint from Andrew Turner, the MP for the Isle of Wight, the OFT has conducted a detailed study to determine whether or not the market has been working well for consumers and announced today that it was not minded to refer the market to the Competition Commission for a detailed investigation.

Marc Israel, who led the Macfarlanes team, commented: 'We are delighted to have advised Wightlink on the OFT's market study. We believe that all the evidence shows that the market for cross-Solent travel is very competitive and are pleased that the OFT has endorsed that view. It has been particularly interesting to work on a case that has generated such a lot of public reaction, especially from residents of the Isle of Wight many of whom supported Mr Turner's petition. Whilst a final decision is yet to be taken, we hope and believe that the OFT's provisional views will be confirmed in due course, and we look forward to working with Wightlink and the OFT through the rest of the process.'
