Comment: Government drops tax treaty avoidance rules
David Gauke (the Exchequer Secretary) has announced a u-turn by the Government on its proposed tax treaty avoidance rules. The informal consultation on a set of rules is being dropped even before the official end of the consultation period!
This is good news for taxpayers as the proposed rules were potentially far reaching and could have impacted on perfectly commercial arrangements and caused havoc for fairly routine, non-aggressive tax planning.
The Government is to be commended for making its decision known so soon. It is sometimes criticised for consulting but not listening. This time it has obviously heard the clamour, listened and responded positively.
