Macfarlanes old boy wins Taxation Award
Last night, the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke, won the Tax Personality of the Year Award at the Taxation Awards.
Well deserved too. The Exchequer Secretary has had a busy year: setting out the framework for the Government's initiatives to reform the procedures for making tax policy and producing new legislation; setting up the Office for Tax Simplification and generally making great strides in engaging with business and tax professionals.
The proof of the pudding is - of course - in the eating. If we dismiss the disguised remuneration rules as an aberration - although they are a haunting reminder of the bad old days - this year and next, we shall see whether the Government's promises to listen are fulfilled and whether the new processes for consultation actually do produce better legislation.
