Dan qualified with Macfarlanes in 1996 and became a partner in 2003. His work principally covers three areas: contentious employment; corporate litigation; and regulatory matters, and frequently has an international element. He has given lectures internally and externally on litigation and employment topics.

Recent highlights include:

Contentious employment

  • Cases involving contested team moves, claims for breach of confidence and breach of fiduciary duty.
  • Several leading cases, including Cantor Fitzgerald v Bird and others and William Hill v Tucker.
  • Substantial employment tribunal claims including allegations of discrimination and whistle-blowing.

Corporate litigation

  • Shareholder disputes, warranty claims, claims against directors and claims involving private equity firms and hedge funds.
  • Fraud claims including a complex and long-running international fraud claim involving derivatives transactions.

Regulatory

  • Statutory and non-statutory inquiries in relation to City regulatory and other matters, including FSA Inquiries into insider dealing/market abuse and inquiries into 'rogue traders'. Dan advised on the FSA's Inquiry into split-capital investment trusts and has also advised on substantial SFO Inquiries.

Group litigation

  • Trafigura Limited and Trafigura Beheer B.V. on the high profile personal injury claim brought against our client by c. 30,000 claimants from the Ivory Coast. This long running dispute was one of the largest pieces of environmental litigation ever brought before a UK court.
