Ian joined the firm in 1990 and became a partner in 1999. Ian has considerable experience across a broad range of corporate, corporate restructuring and private equity matters.

Ian co-heads the firm's mergers and acquisitions group and chairs the firm's business development committee.

Recent highlights include leading Macfarlanes' teams advising:

  • Four Seasons Health Care, one of the largest UK care home groups, on its high profile debt restructuring;
  • TA Associates on the separate acquisition of retailers Cath Kidston and M and M Direct;
  • Graphite Capital on the separate acquisitions of Teaching Personnel and Protocol Education, the education staff supply businesses;
  • the senior management team of ALcontrol, the European environmental and food testing business, during the course of the restructuring of this business in 2009;
  • turnaround private equity investor, Privet Capital, in connection with its acquisitions of the Lombok furniture chain and Holloway White Allom, the construction specialist;
  • e2v technologies plc on its class 1 acquisitions of QP Semi-Conductors Inc and Atmel Grenoble;
  • Four Seasons Health Care on its acquisition of Care Principles Group, a provider of secure and step down healthcare services;
  • Silverfleet Capital on the acquisition of Paramount Restaurants, whose chains include the Chez Gérard, Caffé Uno and Bertorelli;
  • Alchemy on its investments in Think Money, Swift Advances and Beechcroft Developments;
  • 3i on the public to private of the global manufacturer and distributor of baby products, Mayborn;
  • the senior management team of Domestic & General, the UK's leading provider of warranty protection for domestic appliances, on its £550m public to private;
  • Advent International on the sale of the global outsourcing business Alexander Mann;
  • Sovereign Capital on the sale of the preparatory school business, Alpha Plus;
  • Alchemy on its separate sales of the global air compressor business of CompAir, the classic car insurance broker Footman James and the temporary staffing specialist Right4Staff;
  • the senior management team of global manufacturing business, Edwards, on its MBO from Linde; and
  • the senior management of Celerant Consulting on its MBO from Novell Inc.
