Head of policy for asset management

We are recruiting a head of policy for asset management into our investment management and financial services regulatory groups.

About Macfarlanes

We are an independent London-based law firm with a high profile client base from around the world. We are known for the quality of our work, both in terms of our ability to handle the full range of corporate and commercial matters, and the fact that we can advise our clients on their private affairs. We handle work of the highest quality and complexity on a wide range of matters.

Our size and partner-led approach enable us to give our clients a more personal service underpinned by the highest standards of commitment and care.

As well as that, our independence allows us to choose precisely the right lawyer or firm for our clients' needs in any jurisdiction in the world.

What this means for you

Offering a partner-led service enables our solicitors to learn and develop through working closely with a senior member of the team. Our size means that you will often be very close to the front line, gaining a greater insight into the issues facing our clients. You might be surprised at just how significant your contribution is.

We expect all our solicitors to work closely with clients and assume real responsibility, as well as to participate in client and business development activities. That means wider exposure for you.

Our matters often have a cross-border element, so our solicitors frequently liaise with global businesses and specialists in overseas jurisdictions.

The importance we place on the development of our associates’ legal and commercial skills has allowed us to develop the excellent reputation we have for producing strong lawyers – we believe our education and training programme is second to none.

We all work together as part of a cohesive and supportive team, with the firm recognising, appreciating and rewarding the efforts of its employees.

Macfarlanes’ investment management and financial services regulatory groups comprise c39 fee earners including seven partners, six trainee solicitors, nine paralegals and one professional support lawyer.

Our aim is to be seen as the leading asset management practice within a law firm in the UK. We have been successful in recent years in winning a number of large asset management clients and have grown the revenue of the practice materially.

While we believe the profile of the group in the market has improved in recent years, we are clear that in order to build on this, we need to be at the forefront of industry developments and conversations in order to play a central part in horizon scanning for clients.

Our current model for business development and profile raising relies heavily on the partners, with support being provided by (i) our PSL who focuses primarily on internally facing technical support and precedents and (ii) our marketing manager.

We want to hire a person who can assist with profile raising and practice development in a more market facing role, developing and pursuing client initiatives and engaging with peers, the press and industry bodies on a commercial and technical level.

The role

The title of the role is head of policy for asset management but the successful hire will have a general responsibility, alongside the partners in the group, for helping the development of the asset management practice. Within the group, the role would be seen as a partner level role with the individual attending some group partner meetings.

We would expect the specific functions to include the following:

Technical/peer recognition

  • Contribute, and co-ordinate the contribution by others, to:
    • Responses to consultations by the FCA and other relevant regulators;
    • Articles in the asset management press;
    • Industry and technical bodies.
  • Attend and speak at asset management focussed events.

Profile raising

  • Contribute, and co-ordinate the contribution by others, to:
    • Articles in the trade press;
    • Comment in national newspapers.
  • Attend trade and industry events.

Business development

  • Contribute, and co-ordinate the contribution by others to client mailings, client seminars and specific education for client groupings and specific clients;
  • Assist with the development and delivery of targeted market propositions and initiatives;
  • Develop relationships with potential clients and perform relationship management role where appropriate.

The candidate

The successful candidate will likely to have recently been within a City asset management practice at partner or a senior counsel level, an in-house head of legal or a senior role within an asset management trade body role, but candidates who can otherwise demonstrate the necessary experience, drive and gravitas would be considered.

In addition the successful hire will have energy, enthusiasm and will enjoy working in a cohesive team.

The role will ideally be full time, although we could consider a three or four day per week role.

This job description encompasses the main duties of the role and is by no means exhaustive. It is anticipated that duties may vary from time to time according to the needs of the practice area.

Our commitment to inclusion

At Macfarlanes we understand the importance of an inclusive culture, the continued development of which has been identified as one of our key priorities. Our focus is to foster an inclusive culture throughout the firm, from entry level to partnership. It is about recruiting, retaining and promoting all staff in the firm fairly, and we strive to ensure that everyone has the same chance to develop and advance. An inclusive, forward-thinking culture also enables us to provide innovative solutions to our clients, whether they are internal or external.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, bringing different perspectives and experiences, making Macfarlanes an exciting and stimulating place to work. We seek to recruit the best candidates, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity, background, religion, physical abilities, sexual orientation or any other characteristic.
