Tax compliance manager - personal tax/trusts

We are seeking to recruit a tax compliance manager into our private client group.

The group

The private client group provides legal advice on a wide variety of issues to wealthy individuals, trustees and to other institutions and firms for themselves or their private clients.

The trust and tax compliance team sits within the group and comprises four tax managers and two administrators, with partner support from across the wider private client group.

The team’s responsibilities include:

  • administering approximately 150 domestic trusts for wealthy families and entrepreneurs. The work covers the full spectrum of Discretionary and Interest in Possession trusts and charities where the team manages the accounting and tax compliance cycle, IHT reporting, monitoring of investments, Trust Register, FATCA, CRS, trustee meetings etc.
  • managing the UK personal tax affairs of approximately 100 (and growing) mainly resident non-domiciled high net worth and ultra-high net worth individuals.
  • looking after other ad hoc tax reporting and project work - including Non Resident Landlord Scheme, Non Resident CGT, taxation of deceased estates, worldwide disclosure reporting and other HMRC enquiry work.

The role

The team is seeing substantial growth in the number of new personal tax cases and is therefore looking for either a full or part time tax manager to take on a portfolio geared towards personal tax, but which might (depending on the candidate’s experience) include trust and other more general project work. Therefore whilst the ideal candidate will have experience and expertise in all of the above areas, the main focus of this role will be non-dom personal tax compliance. Solid practical experience in this area, the statutory residence test, remittance basis and associated issues will be key.

This is primarily a hands-on compliance based position that will follow the normal tax compliance calendar. However, there will be a significant amount of responsibility as the successful candidate will often act as the primary contact for clients and will need to have the technical capability to work with limited review procedures directly for partners in the private client group. Strong client relationship skills will be needed to fulfil the role.

There will be little opportunity for delegation and the successful candidate will need to have the technical capability and client care experience to take responsibility for their own case load without multiple layers of review but with excellent partner support.

The candidate

We are looking for:

  • A professionally qualified (CTA, ATT, STEP) candidate with a solid career history in the personal tax group of either an accountancy or law firm and with a minimum of five years’ experience dealing with non-dom tax compliance. Ideally the candidate will also have some experience of trust taxation especially IHT reporting and the ability to understand trust accounts and the wider trust tax reporting cycle. Whilst the main focus of the role is expected to be personal tax, a willingness on occasion to take on other elements of the work undertaken by the team is essential.

The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail and technical ability, and be keen to take ownership of the role. The individual will need to demonstrate qualities that will fit within a cohesive, supportive and friendly team. This is a busy team and it is essential that the individual has a hands-on approach and a strong work ethic.

Please note that the job description is not exhaustive and may vary in line with changes in the team’s objectives and firm’s policy.
