I spent six months on secondment at the New York office of an international firm with a formidable reputation and a diverse client base.

Based in the trusts and estates group, their work is wide ranging and covers gift and estate planning issues for wealthy families and individuals, and includes a very active trusts and estates litigation practice.  The group is involved in a significant level of work with an international element (in contrast to many trusts and estates groups of large New York firms, which focus primarily on domestic estate planning work).

Invaluable experience

During my secondment, I have been involved in matters with clients in jurisdictions including Mexico, Switzerland and Taiwan and advised on tax and estate planning issues faced by US citizens living in the UK and trusts with UK resident beneficiaries.  Additionally, I had the opportunity to work on a large quantity of pure US domestic matters, such as preparing wills, trusts and tax research memoranda, and advising on charitable giving.  Gaining an in-depth experience of classic US estate planning has been invaluable in improving my understanding of the US / UK work that we commonly encounter at Macfarlanes.
