Why did you join Macfarlanes?
I've been in law firms for most of my working life and was very aware of Macfarlanes' excellent reputation, so when I heard there was a vacancy I didn't hesitate to put myself forward. I was interviewing elsewhere but when Macfarlanes offered me the position I didn't wait for the outcome of the other interviews - I accepted straightaway.
Describe a typical day
I'm one of three HR Managers and we all work very much as generalists, so responsibilities cover a wide range of HR issues including resourcing, employee relations, policy and procedure, management data, compensation and reward, as well as plenty of ad hoc projects. I have a particular responsibility for our online flexible benefits system and I very much enjoy running the introductory training sessions which put me in touch with all our new joiners. There's really no such thing as a typical day - it's a case of making sure the regular weekly, monthly and seasonal tasks and projects are completed, whilst at the same time being prepared to answer queries from staff or partners, or to drop everything for an urgent matter that needs dealing with yesterday!
What do you like about Macfarlanes?
First of all, it’s great to work with talented, intelligent people who are not only really good at their jobs, but also good people to be around. That’s true across the firm, but the icing on the cake for me is the team of people I work with every day. We get on really well with each other so although we work hard to provide a great service, we also have a lot of fun along the way. Watch out for us on the dance floor at the Christmas party…
