Parliamentary review of the regulation of defined benefit pension schemes

Following the conclusion this summer of the joint parliamentary review in relation to the BHS Pension Scheme, the Work and Pensions Committee (Committee) has commenced a wider review of the role of the Pensions Regulator (Regulator) and the Pension Protection Fund (PPF).

It has been suggested that BHS has highlighted the need for wider regulatory powers including a mandatory regulatory clearance process that would minimise the risk of another BHS-type failure in the future.

This publication analyses the merits of a mandatory clearance process and considers whether the proposed objectives can be achieved within the existing regulatory framework.
