Lawtech graduate programme

Our lawtech practice develops technological solutions for legal problems. It offers new and innovative ways to tackle clients’ most complex issues and to enhance and streamline the firm’s services.

We are both bold in approach and ambitious in delivery, encouraging clients to test us. We push the boundaries of what technologies can do. The lawtech team combines diversity of insight with experience of technology, data, design, knowledge management, process, change and law. This helps us develop a range of creative and forward-thinking solutions to complement the firm’s legal expertise. As an integrated part of the firm, the team benefits from our strong relationships with clients and in-depth knowledge of their businesses and the issues they face.

This understanding enables us to provide custom-built solutions, often designed from the ground up, to fulfil clients’ specific legal needs.

The graduate programme

Our lawtech graduate programme spans the first two years of your career in the lawtech team. It exposes you to legal technology in action and equips you with the skills to become a fully fledged lawtech professional. You will be trained in new technologies, tools and approaches. You learn how to apply them to legal practice, how to use them to develop sophisticated digital solutions and how to help nurture a culture of innovation and creativity across an organisation.

You will join the lawtech team as a legal technology and innovation executive. From the outset, you are supported by a structured and comprehensive training programme. There are clear competencies and areas of expertise you will develop, and milestones to measure your progress. On successful completion of the programme, you progress to legal technology and innovation officer level. Here, you take on more responsibility for internal and client-facing projects. You hone your skill set further and develop as a future leader.

What to expect

Unsurprisingly, no two days are the same. One day you might work with AI technology to support the work our lawyers do; on another you might work on a cutting-edge digital solution for a client. Or, you might facilitate an ideas workshop for future projects.

Throughout the programme, you gain experience of AI, collaborative technologies, document automation, process automation and robotics, expert systems, knowledge management systems, data visualisation, project management tools and a host of other legal technologies.

You develop, prototype and roll out digital solutions for clients. You explore new tools and technologies and consider their potential use by the firm and clients. You advise and support our teams and clients on lawtech solutions. And you help promote a culture of innovation across the firm by participating in, and facilitating, design and idea workshops, training sessions and forums.

You also develop a strong understanding of our practice areas, business services teams and clients by working closely with colleagues across the firm, who are leaders in their fields.

Our lawtech practice prides itself on collaborating across areas of speciality and expertise, rather than working in silos. This makes us different from some other firms and, we believe, is instrumental to our success. It allows us to develop broad expertise across the team, which enables us to offer a comprehensive and holistic service.

Our graduate programme is structured similarly – you do not rotate through “seats” with narrow areas of focus. Instead, you build your expertise across each of our core areas as you work on projects. You develop skills as you go along and understand from those projects how our core areas are inextricably linked.

The lawtech graduate programme is built around the following areas

  • Legal technology
  • Legal and commercial awareness
  • Strategy and business development
  • Project management and logistics
  • Knowledge and data management
  • Engagement and collaboration

Working across these core areas, you develop:

  • competency across our technology stack, thoroughly understanding the functionality of each technology and its practical application;
  • contextual legal and commercial knowledge and awareness of the firm’s practice areas and clients;
  • a clear understanding of our lawtech strategy, areas of focus and business development initiatives;
  • workload, stakeholder management and project leadership skills required to run projects to completion;
  • technical knowledge and data management capabilities and expertise required to grow, maintain and promote a culture of knowledge sharing across the firm; and
  • functional knowledge of engagement and collaboration initiatives in place within the practice relating to internal and external clients.

Who we look for

There is no “typical” legal technologist. Diversity is important to us, in all its forms. We are a team from different backgrounds, with a variety of expertise and insight. This helps us challenge the status quo, see things differently and come up with creative solutions.

The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • a final year student or graduate looking for an exciting opportunity to forge a career within a dynamic, expanding area of the legal profession;
  • an interest in legal technology and its application to legal practice, with an organised, meticulous and methodical approach to work and an eye for detail;
  • a good communicator able to quickly gain the confidence and trust of, and build strong relationships with, internal colleagues and clients;
  • a passion for a challenge, with the ability to thrive on problem solving and analysis; and
  • a positive and proactive mindset, with a can-do attitude.
