James advises on a wide range of civil disputes and investigations, including international commercial arbitration, regulatory and internal investigations and civil fraud matters.

James acts for a range of clients in international commercial arbitration, including LCIA and SIAC arbitrations, as well in civil fraud and commercial litigation disputes before the High Court and appellate courts. James also has experience acting for both individuals and corporates in both internal and regulatory investigations, as well as advising on financial crime matters. James frequently works on cross-jurisdictional matters. Clients value his efficiency, attentiveness to detail and commercial approach.

Alongside client work, James contributes regularly to the firm’s pro bono initiatives, including RCJ Advice and the Refugee Law Clinic.

James is a member of the LCIA’s Young International Arbitration Group and the Young Fraud Lawyers Association.

Experience

  • Acting for an energy development company in an LCIA arbitration to successfully pursue claims for breach of joint venture agreements for the development of a solar power plant in Uganda and to defend allegations of fraud. Advising on connected proceedings in Uganda including enforcement of the arbitral awards.
  • Acting for a mass-market beauty company in conducting an internal investigation relating to allegations of accounting and corporate governance failings. Acting in a subsequent FCA market abuse investigation and in relation to civil proceedings threatened under s90 FSMA.
  • Acting for a leading sports media company in a SIAC arbitration brought to protect valuable football broadcasting rights. Advising the same client on broadcasting rights for other competitions.
  • Representing various individuals in respect of both internal and regulatory investigations.
  • Acting for an individual in a successful jurisdiction challenge before the English Commercial Court and Court of Appeal in a significant high-value civil fraud claim.
  • Advising a financial institution in relation to an LCIA arbitration regarding breach of an ISDA agreement, including successfully contesting an application to set aside the arbitral award.
  • Advising a client in relation to private damages actions concerning EC Decision AT.39824 (Trucks).
