About

Owen represents private equity sponsors and their portfolio companies, corporate borrowers and issuers, credit funds, banks and other financial institutions and investors on a broad range of domestic and cross-border debt finance transactions.

Owen specialises in advising borrowers, issuers, lenders and investors on acquisition and corporate facilities (including leveraged financings, investment grade, sub-investment grade and hybrid facilities, and recapitalisations), specialty financings, restructurings and fund finance facilities.

In recent years, Owen has completed a secondment with a leading independent law firm in New York (acting on various liability management exercises and global multi-billion-dollar M&A processes), as well as client secondments with two private credit funds and a leading global investment bank.

Having been a professional rugby player prior to becoming a lawyer, Owen has a keen interest in the intersection of sports, investment and the law, and is a leading member of the firm's sports finance practice. 

Owen is recognised as a key lawyer in acquisition finance by Legal500 2025.  He trained at the firm and, alongside his client work, enjoys acting as a mentor for the firm's Training Scholarship initiative with Brunel University, acts as a trainee supervisor, and participates in the Finance team's AI development group. 

Experience

  • Advising Surrey County Cricket Club on a partnership with Reliance Industries Limited in respect of the Oval Invincibles franchise in The Hundred.
  • Advising private equity firm Exponent on its investment in Isio, including: the financing aspects of the original carve-out acquisition of KPMG's pensions advisory business (subsequently re-branded as Isio) in 2020, being one of the first spin-outs of a team from a big 4 accountancy firm; Isio's subsequent acquisition of Deloitte LLP's UK pensions advisory business in 2023; and Exponent's exit in 2024.
  • Advising private equity firm Epiris on its investment in the James Hay/Saunderson House/Nucleus businesses, including: the original take-private acquisition of IFG Group plc (holding the James Hay and Saunderson House businesses) in 2019; the demerger of James Hay and Saunderson House; the disposal of Saunderson House to Rathbone Brothers plc in 2021; the take-private acquisition of Nucleus Financial Group plc in 2021; and the disposal of a majority stake in the combined business to HPS Investment Partners in 2022.
  • Advising investment banking company PJT Partners, in its capacity as lead financial adviser, in connection with the $28bn recommended cash offer for Horizon Therapeutics plc by Amgen Inc.
  • Advising private equity firm Preservation Capital Partners on the financing aspects of its investment in Saltus, one of the fastest-growing wealth management firms in the UK.
  • Advising independent specialty insurance and reinsurance broker BMS Group on an agreement with Eurazeo for an additional investment valuing the business at £1.75bn.
  • Advising FTSE 250 company J D Wetherspoon plc on various matters relating to its syndicated bank financing.
  • Advising private equity firm Epiris on the financing aspects of the acquisition of GSF Car Parts (GSF), a motor factor with over 200 branches across the UK.
  • Advising private equity firm August Equity on the acquisition financing aspects of its investment in the Superbia Group, a leading vertically integrated financial advisory group.
