What’s it like being part of the Marketing and BD team at Macfarlanes?

Being part of the Marketing and BD team involves working closely with almost every area of the firm. That variety is what I really enjoy about my role and is what makes it so interesting. I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of projects and initiatives, collaborating with different teams and stakeholders across the business.

Have there been opportunities to grow?

Yes, the standard here is high which motivates you to bring your best. It also feels as if there’s an entrepreneurial culture; if something isn’t quite working or there’s a chance to do something differently or better, people aren’t afraid of making a change. 

I’ve also found the Learning and Development team really helpful. They’re proactive and make training accessible. They regularly send round a schedule of upcoming courses, such as how to improve your communication and presentation skills, and how to write better AI prompts, as well as offering 1:1 coaching. The courses come with toolkits and resources that are easy to apply to your day to day work. When you’re busy, these sessions allow you to take the time to reflect and focus on your own development.

What other opportunities are there to get to know your colleagues at Macfarlanes?

Macfarlanes feels like a very social firm and it’s an enjoyable place to work. There are lots of people networks and social clubs that you can join. I did the MacsTri last year, which was a static triathlon raising money for our Charity of the Year. I had just started at the firm, so it was a fun way to put myself out there, meet some new people, and build connections. I also took part in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge this summer; there are so many things to sign up to and plenty of opportunities to get involved throughout the year.
