Matthew advises clients on a wide range of EU, UK and global competition law matters including cartels and abuse of dominance investigations, competition litigation, merger control and compliance issues. He combines rigorous legal analysis with a strong understanding of clients’ businesses to provide tailored advice that cuts through complex issues.
He acts across a variety of sectors including pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, sport, technology/ data, financial services and consumer products. He has extensive experience of acting for clients in relation to investigations by competition authorities, both during the administrative stage and in appeals before the Courts (including the Competition Appeals Tribunal, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court). He has significant experience acting for clients on a broad range of high-profile competition litigation actions, and in the obtaining of merger control and FDI clearances for strategic transactions.
Matthew has a PG Diploma and a Master’s degree in EU Competition Law from Kings College London.
Experience
- Advising Associated British Foods in relation to its proposed acquisition of Hovis.
- Advising Flynn Pharma in connection with two high-profile CMA investigations relating to the charging of excessive and unfair prices for phenytoin, including consequential precedent-setting appeals before the Tribunal, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
- Acting for Preqin during a CMA Phase 1 merger control process in relation to its successful £2.55bn sale to Blackrock.
- Acting for Mercedes Benz/ Daimler in relation to its defence of various damages claims arising from the European Commission’s Trucks Decision.
- Advising Beacon Rail during a CMA Phase 1 merger control process in relation to its acquisition of Eversholt.
- Advising Banco de Sabadell S.A., a Spanish listed multinational financial services company, on the £2.65bn sale of TSB Banking Group plc to Banco Santander.
- Acting for PRS in relation to its defence of an application brought by Mr Dave Rowntree for an opt-out collective proceedings order (CPO).
