Macfarlanes announces new partners and Senior Counsel

27 March 2017

Macfarlanes is pleased to announce that the following will become partners in the firm on 1 May.

  • Richard Burrows (M&A)
  • Jeremy Moncrieff (Tax)
  • Sarah Ward (Banking & Finance)

Charles Martin, Senior Partner, says: “This is a strong bench of new partners from across the firm. Each of the practice areas that they operate in has a clear and distinctive sense of direction and strong momentum. In a market that is tough and likely to get tougher the commitment of highly talented young partners to driving forward their respective practice areas is of critical importance. We are confident that these three lawyers will each play an important part in the future success of the firm.”

Richard Burrows joined the firm as a senior associate having trained and worked at a Magic Circle firm. He has since played a critical part in a number of the most high profile M&A transactions that Macfarlanes has worked on. He was the lead associate in advising Altria, the largest shareholder in SABMiller (holding 27 per cent) on AB Inbev’s £79bn offer for SABMiller and Altria’s investment in the new parent of the combined group. Richard has a broad practice across all fields of company and corporate law, including private acquisitions and disposals, public takeovers and ECM transactions.

Jeremy Moncrieff joined the firm as a senior associate having trained and worked at a Magic Circle firm. His focus within the corporate tax and structuring practice is on public and private M&A and reorganisations, particularly for corporate clients. He has worked on a variety of private equity sponsor driven transactions and corporate M&A including playing an important role on the recent merger of Visa International and Visa Europe.

Sarah Ward trained with the firm and since qualification has focused on acting for lenders in our banking and finance practice. Along with acting for our longstanding banking clients she has acted for a number of important credit fund clients in recent years.

Macfarlanes is also pleased to announce that the following will become Senior Counsel on the same date:

  • Joanna Constantis (Litigation)
  • Paul Keddie (Restructuring)
  • Lauren Roberts (Litigation)

Charles Martin, Senior Partner, comments: “The role of our Senior Counsel is an important one. Each of our Senior Counsel plays a valuable role in their practice area, often providing leadership to more junior lawyers and acting as a key element in our client relationships. These lawyers have demonstrated that they have the talent to make valuable contributions in these important areas.”
