Macfarlanes advises ING on sustainable financing for 40 Holborn Viaduct redevelopment

06 January 2026

Macfarlanes has advised ING as arranger and bookrunner on the £170 million green loan to finance the redevelopment of 40 Holborn Viaduct.

Macfarlanes Real Estate Finance team advised on the financing arrangements, with a particular focus on ESG elements to support the sustainability requirements of both ING and Nuveen Real Estate. This redevelopment, which is being undertaken on a speculative basis, will see the property converted from a traditional brown building to a sustainable green workspace. The financing is indicative of growing lender engagement with the Central London office market after a period of limited transactional activity.

The Macfarlanes team was led by Real Estate Finance Partner Laura Bretherton, supported by Head of Real Estate Clare Breeze and Construction Partner Angus Dawson, with Senior Associates Scott Perry, Kirsty Childs and Megan Barclay.
