Macfarlanes advises Visa on the European Commission's inter-regional interchange fees case

02 May 2019

Macfarlanes advised Visa in relation to the European Commission's investigation into multi-lateral interchange fees levied on payments made in the EEA with consumer cards issued outside the EEA.

Macfarlanes assisted Visa in responding to the preliminary concerns raised by the European Commission in its Statement of Objections. The firm also jointly represented Visa in the subsequent Oral Hearing in Brussels. The case has now been resolved after the Commission announced it would accept commitments offered by Visa.

The Macfarlanes team was led by competition partner Christophe Humpe and senior consultant Stephen Kon assisted by senior counsel Fiona Beattie and senior solicitors Lisa Kaltenbrunner and Vladimir Adamis.
